The best beach ceremony spots in Hervey Bay

Our favourite beach and waterfront ceremony spots around Hervey Bay, plus what to know about booking a park and planning for wind, tides and sunset light.

Hervey Bay is one of the few places on Australia’s east coast where you can watch the sun set over the water. Add calm, shallow bay beaches and a long, leafy Esplanade and it is easy to see why so many couples choose to say I do with sand underfoot.

Here are some of our favourite spots for a beach or waterfront ceremony, plus a few practical things to sort out before you lock in your date.

Bill Fraser Park, Torquay

Right on the Esplanade at Torquay, Bill Fraser Park has a timber deck overlooking the water with direct access to the beach. It is a popular choice for ceremonies because guests can stand or sit on the grass behind the deck while you exchange vows with the bay as your backdrop. Torquay’s cafes and restaurants are a short walk away, which makes the move to drinks easy.

Scarness and Pialba foreshore

The beaches between Scarness and Pialba are wide and gentle, with plenty of shady trees along the foreshore. Head down late in the afternoon for soft light and that golden sunset glow over the water. These stretches are close to several restaurants and function venues, so you can keep travel time for guests to a minimum.

Point Vernon and Gatakers Bay

If you would like something a little more rugged, the rocky foreshore around Point Vernon and Gatakers Bay has a quieter, more natural feel. The views across the water are beautiful at sunset and the rock platforms make for striking photos. Check the tides before you book, as some spots are best at low tide.

Urangan and Dayman Point

At the eastern end of the bay, Urangan is home to the historic Urangan Pier and the marina. Dayman Point looks out towards K’gari and is a lovely, open spot for a ceremony with island views. Your photographer will also love the pier and the marina for portraits afterwards.

Hervey Bay Botanic Gardens

Not quite the beach, but worth a mention. If you want a leafy setting with a backup plan for wind, the Botanic Gardens at Urraween have a bush chapel that council lists for weddings. It is a great option for summer when you want a little shade.

Booking a park for your ceremony

Most beachfront parks along the Esplanade are managed by Fraser Coast Regional Council and you need to make a booking to hold a ceremony there. Council has a list of outdoor locations and halls that can be booked online. A few things to keep in mind.

  • Bookings do not give you exclusive use, so other people may still be using the beach or park.
  • If you plan to serve drinks, let council know when you book.
  • Confetti is not allowed in natural areas, but flower petals and bubbles are fine.
  • Always have a wet weather plan, as most spots have little or no cover.

Fees and rules can change, so check the current details on the Fraser Coast Regional Council weddings page before you book.

Tips for a beach ceremony

  • Time it with the light. An hour or so before sunset gives you soft, flattering light and a cooler breeze.
  • Think about the tide. A high tide can swallow a lot of beach. Your celebrant and photographer can help you pick the best time.
  • Plan for wind. Pin veils, weigh down signage and choose a hairstyle that can handle a sea breeze.
  • Look after your guests. Shade, water and a few chairs for older guests make a big difference.
